Thursday, September 10, 2026 - A Thai police officer accused of fatally shooting his wife at a kindergarten in Chonburi province surrendered Thursday after an 18-hour standoff with authorities.
The officer, identified as Tatsapong Tongthat of Bang Lamung Police Station, allegedly shot his wife, a kindergarten teacher, at Nongplalai Municipal Kindergarten on Wednesday before fleeing to his home, where police surrounded the property and began negotiations.
The standoff ended peacefully after the officer surrendered to authorities. Police said he surrendered without a firearm and later indicated where the weapon had been left.
The shooting prompted an immediate security response at the school, while all 44 children and other teachers were safely evacuated. Classes were suspended as authorities worked to ensure the safety of students and staff.
The case remains under investigation, with the motive still unclear. The incident is also intensifying concern over gun violence and school safety in Thailand, following several recent shootings that have renewed pressure on authorities to strengthen firearm controls.
The government has ordered a review of gun regulations, including a suspension of new firearm purchase permits and a reassessment of existing ownership.
