Tuesday, September 8, 2026 - King Charles III has formally clarified Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal status following their return to the UK, confirming that the couple remain non-working members of the Royal Family.
The guidance, issued on the King’s behalf by Lord Chamberlain Lord Benyon, was sent to senior government and military officials as well as Lord Lieutenancies after requests for clarification about the Sussexes’ position. The message makes clear that their return to Britain does not mean a return to official royal duties.
The letter confirms there has been no change to the couple’s existing status. Harry and Meghan’s His and Her Royal Highness styles remain in abeyance and are not used, while their charitable activities continue to be carried out privately rather than as official royal engagements.
The guidance also makes clear that the couple operate independently from the Royal Household, maintaining the separation established when they stepped back from working royal duties.
