Thursday, September 10, 2026 - Bangladesh’s High Court has ordered Grameen Kalyan, an organisation owned by Nobel laureate and former interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus, to pay Tk666 crore (about $54 million) in taxes claimed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
The ruling was delivered on Thursday by a High Court bench led by Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah, rejecting the legal challenge brought against the tax demands.
The dispute covers five assessment years, from 2012–13 through 2016–17. According to court-related reporting, the tax authority’s claims involved the treatment of income connected to an arrangement between Grameen Kalyan and Grameen Telecom, including questions over tax deducted at source.
Grameen Kalyan had challenged the NBR’s reassessed demands, but Thursday’s decision clears the way for the tax authority to pursue recovery of the Tk666 crore.
The ruling could now move into another legal stage. Yunus’s lawyer said Grameen Kalyan plans to appeal the decision before Bangladesh’s Appellate Division after receiving the full judgment.
The case therefore remains significant, not only because of the size of the tax bill, but also because it puts a major financial dispute involving one of Bangladesh’s most prominent figures back in the spotlight.
