TRUMP names intelligence chief JAY CLAYTON as new AI czar

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 - President Donald Trump has appointed Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to serve as the White House’s new AI czar, placing artificial intelligence even more firmly within the administration’s national-security agenda.

Clayton will lead the newly created Super Intelligence Force, which will coordinate federal efforts to keep the United States at the forefront of advanced AI while examining the technology’s risks and opportunities.

The new task force has 120 days to produce a report assessing AI threats, opportunities and the federal government’s role in managing them. Its work will involve agencies and officials responsible for technology, defense, cybersecurity and economic policy, while also engaging AI companies and other stakeholders.

Clayton has described advanced AI as both a major opportunity and a potential threat, reinforcing the administration’s focus on maintaining U.S. leadership while addressing security concerns.

The appointment could accelerate Washington’s response to rapidly developing AI capabilities at a time when concerns over cybersecurity, autonomous systems and AI safety are intensifying.

Trump has generally favored lighter regulation, arguing that excessive restrictions could undermine America’s ability to compete with China. Clayton’s 120-day review will therefore be closely watched by technology companies, investors and policymakers as the administration decides how aggressively the government should shape the next phase of the AI race.
