Ethiopian rebel forces withdraw from Tigray regional capital

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 - Rebel forces have withdrawn from Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, allowing government-aligned forces to retake control of the city after renewed fighting.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front said it pulled back to avoid further destruction and civilian casualties, while pro-government forces moved into the city and its airport. The development represents a major shift in the fighting that erupted in late September.

The situation remains highly volatile despite the change in control. Fresh airstrikes and artillery exchanges have been reported elsewhere in Tigray, with humanitarian sources reporting at least 17 deaths northwest of Mekelle.

Communication disruptions and restrictions on movement are also making it difficult to verify developments and assess the full impact on civilians.

The immediate priority is restoring security and keeping essential services operating as the conflict threatens to deepen a humanitarian crisis and spread beyond Tigray. Tensions between Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea have also sharply increased, while regional governments and international partners are calling for restraint.

For businesses and communities across northern Ethiopia, stability in Mekelle will be critical to restoring transport, trade and basic economic activity.
