Thursday, September 10, 2026 - Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem’s new psychological thriller Bunker received a huge response at the Venice Film Festival, with reports putting the standing ovation at around 15 to 16 minutes.
Cruz was visibly emotional as the audience applauded, while the reception quickly became one of the festival’s biggest talking points. Yet the length of the applause has raised questions about whether the film itself truly earned such an enthusiastic response.
Despite the star power of Cruz and Bardem, early critical reactions have been considerably less enthusiastic. The film, directed by Florian Zeller, follows a married couple whose relationship comes under pressure after Bardem’s character agrees to design a luxury survivalist bunker for a billionaire.
The film explores ideas around wealth, inequality, paranoia and marital tension, with the story examining the emotional and moral challenges facing the couple.
That contrast between audience enthusiasm and critical opinion makes Bunker one of the more intriguing films coming out of Venice this year. A lengthy standing ovation can create enormous buzz, but it does not necessarily guarantee a film will connect with audiences once the festival excitement fades.
With Bunker heading to Toronto before its wider theatrical release, viewers will soon have the opportunity to decide for themselves whether the film deserved the applause—or whether Venice simply got carried away by the presence of two major stars.
