Monday, April 13, 2026-Pope Leo XIV has sharply condemned what he called the “delusion of omnipotence,” warning that it is fueling the ongoing U.S.–Israeli war in Iran and pushing global leaders toward dangerous escalation.
Speaking during a peace vigil at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, the pontiff said modern warfare is being driven by a belief that overwhelming military and technological power can override moral limits and international restraint.
He argued that this mindset has helped intensify the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, which continues to destabilize the broader Middle East.
The Pope did not directly name individual leaders in his remarks, but his message was widely interpreted as a rebuke of political and military rhetoric justifying the war. He urged leaders to abandon “the idolatry of power” and instead pursue negotiations, warning that continued escalation risks dragging the region deeper into suffering and destruction.
As tensions rise on multiple fronts—including stalled diplomacy and growing international concern—the Vatican has positioned itself as a vocal advocate for restraint. The Pope’s message reflects increasing global unease that the conflict is being shaped not only by strategic interests, but also by competing narratives of dominance and deterrence that leave little room for compromise.
