Student survives 90-foot fall from apartment window after landing on metal bench

Thursday, October 1, 2026 - A 21-year-old University of Georgia student is recovering after falling from an eighth-floor apartment window in Athens, Georgia, on September 26.

Police said Kristin Sargent apparently fell through a screen while dancing near an open window at the Rambler Athens apartment complex. She landed on a courtyard pool deck, where investigators believe a cushioned metal bench helped break her fall.

The impact left Sargent with serious injuries, but authorities said she is expected to survive. Her father told local media that she is awake, communicating with family and friends, and recovering in intensive care.

Police found blood on the bench cushion and a broken armrest, evidence consistent with Sargent striking the bench during the fall.

The incident has also renewed attention on window safety in student housing. Rambler Athens told residents that its windows are equipped with safety limiters and urged tenants not to remove or disable them.

Police have described the fall as accidental, while the circumstances surrounding the window remain under review.
