Monday, September 28, 2026 - South Africa is facing renewed alarm over violent crime after three mass shootings in six days left at least 38 people dead and nearly 30 wounded across communities near Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
The latest attacks came within hours of each other, with 17 people killed at a township bar near Johannesburg and another 10 killed at a venue near Cape Town.
The violence has put renewed attention on illegal firearms, organized crime and gang activity in vulnerable communities. Police say the attacks involved multiple gunmen, while authorities are investigating possible links to criminal networks and local disputes.
The Durban shooting earlier in the week killed 11 people at a house party, including a pregnant woman.
With investigations continuing and suspects still being sought in the latest attacks, pressure is mounting on South African authorities to strengthen efforts against armed criminal groups and illegal guns.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously described organized crime as a major threat to the country, while the government has deployed soldiers to support police operations in areas heavily affected by violent crime.
