Saudi-led coalition accuses Houthis of striking Medina power station

Friday, October 2, 2026 - The Saudi-led coalition has accused Yemen’s Houthi movement of carrying out a drone attack on an electricity distribution station in Medina, Saudi Arabia, on September 29.

The coalition said the strike damaged one transformer at the Taibah station, which supplies electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque, but that the wider power network remained operational.

The Houthis have denied responsibility, calling the Saudi accusation false and rejecting claims that they have targeted Islamic holy sites.

The coalition said its investigation, including examination of drone debris, identified Houthi involvement. The competing claims have emerged as fighting intensifies in Yemen and tensions between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces continue to rise.

The incident is adding to concerns about a wider escalation across the region. Saudi-backed Yemeni forces have reported fresh strikes against Houthi positions, while Houthi sources have reported Saudi attacks on areas of Yemen.

With Medina home to one of Islam’s holiest sites, the competing allegations have drawn strong reactions from several governments and religious institutions, putting further pressure on efforts to contain the conflict.
