Tuesday, October 6, 2026 - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced more than €1.3 billion in new support for Ukraine during his October 4 visit to Kyiv, including about €1 billion in military assistance and €350 million for energy infrastructure repairs ahead of winter.
The military package includes long-range weapons, combat drones and satellite technology, while Germany will also support the production of drone interceptors designed to counter Russia’s increasingly fast jet-powered drones.
The announcement came as Russian attacks continued during Merz’s visit. Air-raid sirens sounded in Kyiv, and Russia struck the Northern Bridge across the Dnipro River, injuring two people and damaging infrastructure, according to Kyiv authorities.
Merz said Germany would not be intimidated and argued that supporting Ukraine is directly linked to European security.
The immediate challenge is now preparing Ukraine for an increasingly difficult winter while strengthening its ability to defend critical infrastructure. Germany and Ukraine also announced new industrial and defense agreements worth billions of euros, expanding cooperation on air defense, radar systems and drone technology.
With attacks intensifying and diplomatic efforts still uncertain, Berlin’s latest commitment signals that military readiness, energy security and European cooperation will remain central to Ukraine’s strategy in the weeks ahead.
