Brazilians vote in first round of presidential election

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 - Brazil’s 2026 presidential election has moved into a decisive second stage after voters cast their ballots on October 4.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro finished first with 47.03% of valid votes, while incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received 45.16%, according to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court. Neither candidate crossed the 50% threshold required for an outright victory, sending the race to a runoff.

The result has immediately intensified competition ahead of the October 25 runoff, with both campaigns now focused on voters who supported other candidates in the first round.

The election is also producing major changes beyond the presidency, with congressional and gubernatorial races reshaping Brazil’s political landscape. The Liberal Party, led by Bolsonaro’s political movement, recorded particularly strong gains.

The next three weeks will be critical for Brazil’s political and economic direction. Both candidates must broaden their support while addressing voters’ concerns over the economy, public security and the country’s future role internationally.

With the first round separated by only a few percentage points, the October 25 vote will determine whether Brazil stays under Lula or moves toward a new government led by Flávio Bolsonaro.
