Thursday, October 8, 2026 - India is positioning its relationship with Africa as a long-term strategic partnership, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said during his visit to Ghana.
Speaking in Accra, he called for deeper cooperation on supply-chain resilience, strategic autonomy and shared priorities across the Global South. His visit is the first stop on a three-nation African tour that also includes Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia.
The focus is increasingly economic and practical. India and Ghana are expanding cooperation in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, mining, defence, railways, digital technology, agriculture and skills development, with new agreements signed on agricultural research and biodiversity.
Ghana has also announced plans to formally seek BRICS membership, adding another potential avenue for stronger India-Ghana economic and diplomatic engagement.
The push comes as both sides look for greater economic resilience and more influence within the Global South. Jaishankar said India is ready to share its experience in digital systems, infrastructure, manufacturing and development, while Ghana is seeking investment and technology to create jobs and add value to its resources.
With Ghana preparing to chair the African Union in 2027, the partnership could become an increasingly important channel for India’s engagement with the continent.
