Friday, October 2, 2026 - France is facing a rapidly expanding wave of high-school student protests, with demonstrations and blockades spreading across the country.
More than 1,000 schools have been affected, while students are protesting overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, long school hours and deteriorating facilities. The unrest has also included fires, clashes and disruptions to public transport in several cities.
The situation has forced Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to convene a crisis meeting and cancel ministers’ travel plans so the government can focus on the unrest.
Authorities said about 400 schools and other educational institutions were expected to remain closed on October 2, with some classes moving online. Police have made hundreds of arrests, while students, teachers and security personnel have been injured during confrontations.
The government is now under pressure to restore access to education while addressing the concerns driving the protests. Education Minister Édouard Geffray is scheduled to meet student representatives as officials seek to contain the escalation.
With demonstrations continuing and tensions rising, the coming days could prove crucial for determining whether dialogue can calm the movement or whether further disruption will spread.
