CHRISTA PIKE is in critical condition after Tennessee's failed execution attempt, her lawyers say

Friday, October 2, 2026 - Christa Pike remains in critical condition after Tennessee officials failed to carry out her execution by lethal injection on September 30.

Her attorneys said Thursday that Pike, 50, is alive and receiving lifesaving medical care at a hospital after officials administered two doses of pentobarbital. The execution was halted after Pike remained alive during the prolonged procedure.

The incident has triggered an immediate response from Tennessee authorities. Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent review and halted the state’s remaining scheduled executions for 2026.

Pike’s lawyers said they do not yet know her prognosis and raised concerns about possible oxygen deprivation and complications during attempts to establish an intravenous line. Officials have not publicly determined what caused the lethal injection to fail.

The failed execution is now drawing renewed attention to Tennessee’s lethal-injection procedures and the safeguards surrounding capital punishment. Pike had been scheduled to become the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than two centuries.

Her attorneys are calling for her death sentence to be commuted, while the state’s investigation is expected to examine what went wrong during the execution attempt and whether changes to the procedure are necessary.
