Wednesday, September 23, 2026 - Two German tourists have been arrested after sticking two of their own paintings to a wall in the Louvre’s Salle des États, the gallery where Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is displayed.
The men used adhesive tape to attach the 30-by-40-centimetre paintings, prompting museum security to intervene and call police. The Mona Lisa itself was not damaged.
According to police sources, one painting showed one of the men wearing armour, while the second depicted both men alongside a woman. During questioning, the pair reportedly said they carried out the stunt for fun.
They were arrested over minor damage to the gallery wall, and police said they will be summoned to court after the Louvre formally files a complaint.
The incident comes as the Louvre remains under heightened security following a major jewellery heist at the museum last year. With millions of visitors passing through the institution annually, the latest stunt has added another unexpected security challenge.
For now, the focus is on the damage to the wall and the legal proceedings facing the two tourists, while the world-famous painting remains unharmed.
