Wednesday, September 23, 2026 - A public art installation at Tai Kwun has been damaged in an incident now being investigated as suspected criminal damage.
Security staff reported the incident at 11:28 a.m. after a large stone forming part of Polish artist Alicja Kwade’s “Waiting Pavilions” was found separated from a white chair and lying on the ground. The affected area was immediately cordoned off while police began investigating.
The damaged work is part of Tai Kwun Contemporary’s public art programme and was scheduled to remain on display until November 15, 2026. “Waiting Pavilions” uses glass, metal and stone across six prison-like structures in the Prison Yard, creating a contemporary installation designed specifically for the site.
Tai Kwun says it has reported the incident to police and will cooperate with the investigation.
The incident puts fresh attention on the protection of public art and cultural spaces as Tai Kwun continues to attract visitors to its exhibitions and programmes.
Police have not announced an arrest, and the circumstances surrounding the damage remain under investigation. For now, the damaged section remains restricted as authorities and the venue address the incident.
