Monday, September 21, 2026 - French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have pledged to strengthen ties between France and Canada as both countries navigate increasingly strained relations with the United States.
Meeting in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, the leaders highlighted closer cooperation in defence, energy, space, trade and advanced technology, with Carney saying the time had come to strengthen Canada's links with France and the European Union.
The two leaders agreed to develop shared space infrastructure, including launch systems and ground reception facilities, while also expanding cooperation in aerospace, critical minerals, energy security, artificial intelligence and other strategic sectors.
They also discussed Canada's potential closer relationship with the European Union, including the possibility of becoming the bloc's first associate member.
The meeting comes as Ottawa seeks to diversify its economic and strategic partnerships amid tensions with Washington.
Macron and Carney emphasized sovereignty, democratic values, international law and strategic cooperation, while agreeing to continue discussions on security, energy and global affairs during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
