Friday, September 11, 2026 - Ryanair has disputed claims that a passenger was partially sucked out of a plane window during a frightening mid-air incident in July. Passenger Ljubisa Karović was injured after a window shattered shortly after takeoff on a flight from northern Greece to Germany.
His wife and witnesses said the sudden loss of pressure pulled his head and shoulders toward and partly through the broken window, while other passengers helped bring him back to safety.
Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary has strongly challenged that account, insisting that no part of Karović’s body actually left the aircraft. O’Leary said the passenger was “certainly sucked in very dramatic circumstances towards the window” but remained inside the plane and was wearing his seatbelt.
Karović suffered neck and shoulder injuries as well as friction burns, while the incident remains under investigation by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
The window was reportedly shattered by fragments from a broken fan blade from the aircraft’s right engine, causing a serious cabin emergency before the plane safely returned to Greece.
With conflicting accounts now emerging, the investigation will be crucial in establishing exactly what happened during those terrifying moments. For passengers, the incident has renewed attention on aircraft safety and the potentially devastating consequences of a sudden window failure at altitude.
