ROBERT PATTINSON responds after CHRIS HANSEN calls Primetime film an ‘insult’

Thursday, September 23, 2026 - Robert Pattinson has responded to Chris Hansen’s criticism of Primetime, the new film in which the actor portrays the former Dateline NBC presenter.

Hansen has publicly condemned the movie, calling it an “insult” and arguing that the fictionalized story presents his work in a much darker way than reality.

Pattinson, speaking about the controversy, said he was not surprised that Hansen had spoken out. He acknowledged that Hansen is a public figure who would naturally be asked about a film based on his work, while also expressing surprise at the level of attention surrounding the dispute.

Pattinson previously said at the Venice Film Festival that he hoped Hansen would like the movie and view the portrayal as a compliment.

The disagreement has added another layer of attention to Primetime ahead of its U.S. theatrical release on September 25.

Hansen says he was not consulted during production and has objected to the film’s fictionalized portrayal, while Pattinson and the filmmakers have emphasized their interest in exploring the character and the larger story surrounding the controversial television program.

With the film now reaching audiences, the debate over where fact ends and dramatization begins is likely to remain part of the conversation.
