Friday, September 11, 2026 - Rick Springfield has revealed a deeply troubling memory from his youth, saying he accidentally killed a man while performing for American troops during the Vietnam War.
Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience, the singer recalled traveling to Vietnam with his band in 1968, where they spent about four months entertaining soldiers. What began as a music tour took a terrifying turn when Springfield found himself caught in an attack and was encouraged to fire mortars from a military position.
Springfield said he was only 18 and did not fully understand the seriousness of what he was doing. After being told there were no friendly forces in the area, he fired several mortars during the attack.
The following day, soldiers told him that one of his mortars had hit someone. Springfield said the realization has remained with him for decades, describing it as a painful memory he has struggled to process.
Now 77, Springfield says the experience remains one of the heaviest memories he carried home from Vietnam. He acknowledged that he was young, inexperienced and operating in the chaos of war, but said it is still difficult to confront the fact that his actions were connected to the end of another person's life.
His revelation has brought a strikingly personal dimension to the singer's career, showing how an unexpected encounter with combat can leave consequences that last long after the fighting ends.
