RAJNATH SINGH in Sri Lanka for first defence minister visit in 38 years

Tuesday, September 8, 2026 - Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has arrived in Colombo for a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka, marking the first visit by an Indian defence minister to the island nation in 38 years.

Singh, who arrived on Tuesday, is leading a high-level delegation and is expected to hold discussions with Sri Lankan leaders on defence, maritime security and broader regional cooperation. The visit runs through September 10 and comes as both countries seek to deepen their strategic partnership.

Singh is scheduled to meet Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Defence Secretary Sampath Thuyacontha.

Talks are expected to focus heavily on maritime and defence cooperation, with India viewing Sri Lanka as an important partner under its Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR framework. Singh will also interact with members of the Indian community in Colombo during the visit.

The trip is drawing close attention because of Sri Lanka's strategic position in the Indian Ocean and the growing importance of regional maritime security. Both governments are looking to expand practical defence cooperation while strengthening wider economic and security ties.

With the first Indian defence ministerial visit in nearly four decades now underway, the meetings in Colombo could provide fresh momentum to the India-Sri Lanka strategic relationship.
