Hungary expels 10 Russian diplomats, citing unacceptable activities

Tuesday, September 8, 2026 - Hungary has ordered 10 Russian diplomats to leave the country, accusing them of engaging in activities considered unacceptable under the Vienna Convention.

Foreign Minister Anita Orbán said Tuesday that the decision was taken to protect Hungary’s security and sovereignty, while emphasizing that Budapest is not breaking diplomatic relations with Moscow. Hungarian authorities have not publicly detailed the specific activities that led to the expulsions.

The move has triggered an immediate response from Moscow. Russia’s Foreign Ministry has promised a “harsh and painful” response, raising the prospect of further diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

Budapest, however, says it intends to maintain necessary dialogue with Russia and keep diplomatic channels open despite the expulsions.

The expulsions mark a significant development in Hungary’s approach to Moscow as European governments remain increasingly concerned about alleged Russian espionage, sabotage and other forms of hybrid activity.

The decision sends a strong security message while stopping short of a diplomatic rupture, leaving Hungary to balance continued engagement with Russia against growing pressure to protect its national interests and European security.
