Monday, September 21, 2026 - Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, has accused King Charles of “gaslighting” him after Buckingham Palace issued a rare response to claims in his upcoming memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
Spencer alleges that, days after Diana’s death in 1997, the then-Prince Charles told him, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough,” during a disagreement over funeral arrangements.
The palace did not directly confirm or deny Spencer’s account. Instead, a spokesperson said the King was mindful that grief can affect memory, judgment and how events are remembered many years later.
Spencer has strongly rejected that suggestion, saying he clearly remembers the conversation and insists he told friends and family about it at the time because of how shocking he found it.
The dispute has now placed Spencer’s memoir under intense public attention ahead of its September 22 release. He has continued to defend his account in recent interviews, while the palace has maintained its position.
The competing versions of events remain disputed, with no independent evidence publicly establishing which recollection is accurate.
