Dakar hosts Africa's first Olympic event

Saturday, October 31, 2026 - Africa has entered a historic sporting milestone as Dakar, Senegal, officially opens the 2026 Youth Olympic Games on October 31, marking the first time an Olympic sporting event has been held on African soil.

The global competition brings together approximately 2,700 young athletes aged 14 to 17 from around the world, competing in 25 sports for 153 medal events. The Games will run until November 13, placing Senegal and the African continent at the centre of international sporting attention.

Competitions and activities will take place across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, featuring sports such as athletics, swimming, football, boxing, skateboarding and basketball-related disciplines. The event also introduces new opportunities for young athletes through sports including Baseball5, Wushu and beach wrestling.

More than 6,000 volunteers are supporting the organisation, while the Games are expected to attract international visitors, sports officials and media organisations. Beyond competition, the programme promotes youth development, cultural exchange, gender equality and greater participation in sports across Africa.

The opening of Dakar 2026 represents an important opportunity for Africa to expand its influence in global sports, attract investment and develop facilities for future generations. Senegal now faces the challenge of ensuring that the event delivers lasting benefits through improved sporting infrastructure, tourism, employment and youth development.

For African athletes, the Games provide an international platform to showcase their abilities and inspire the next generation. As the competitions begin, the focus extends beyond medals to the continent's growing ambitions in international sport and its potential to host even bigger global sporting events.
