Friday, September 24, 2026 - Residents and police in Acapulco battled powerful waves to pull a small boat to safety as Hurricane Polo generated dangerous conditions along Mexico’s Pacific coast.
Dramatic footage showed several people struggling through the heavy surf as they worked to move the vessel away from the water and onto safer ground.
The rescue came as Polo moved offshore after reaching Category 5 strength. The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned that the storm was generating dangerous swells, rip currents and coastal flooding along parts of southwestern Mexico, with rainfall also posing a risk of flooding and mudslides.
Authorities continued monitoring coastal areas as rough seas threatened boats, businesses and communities.
In Acapulco, the effort to secure the vessel highlighted the immediate danger facing people working or living near the shoreline, where powerful waves and rapidly changing conditions can make even routine rescue efforts extremely hazardous.
