Friday, September 24, 2026 - The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a growing shortage of health workers as the country battles an expanding Ebola outbreak.
The World Health Organization says North Kivu has recorded a 73% increase in cases over three weeks, while the outbreak has now spread across seven provinces. Government figures reported on September 22 put confirmed cases at 7,773, including 3,759 deaths.
The shortage is putting additional pressure on treatment centres already dealing with a rapidly changing outbreak. WHO says more staff are urgently needed as transmission continues in some areas, even though cases have declined in parts of Ituri and Haut-Uélé.
More than 4,000 health professionals have already been deployed to reinforce response teams, but the scale and geographic spread of the outbreak continue to stretch available resources.
The situation makes the availability of trained health workers a critical part of the emergency response.
WHO says the outbreak remains uncontrolled, while insecurity, displacement and limited access to healthcare are making surveillance and treatment harder in affected communities. With thousands of patients requiring care and new infections continuing to emerge, strengthening frontline medical teams is becoming increasingly urgent.
