Pakistan says it shot down eight drones from Afghanistan amid border firing

Thursday, September 23, 2026 - Pakistan says its security forces shot down eight drones that entered its airspace from Afghanistan on Wednesday, September 23, as fresh exchanges of fire along the border heightened tensions between the two countries.

Security sources said four drones were brought down near the Torkham border, while another four were intercepted in mountainous areas near Kohat in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The claims could not be independently verified.

The reported drone interceptions came amid renewed fighting along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier. Pakistani officials said their forces had earlier prevented an attempted militant infiltration and accused Afghan Taliban forces of subsequently firing mortars and other heavy weapons at Pakistani border positions.

Afghanistan's Taliban government has rejected Pakistan's allegations that its forces attacked Pakistani positions.

The situation escalated further on Thursday, September 24, when Pakistan said it carried out air and drone strikes against 10 locations in Afghanistan that it alleged were being used to launch or store drones.

Afghan officials said Pakistani strikes killed four civilians in Kandahar, Paktia and Khost, while the competing claims underline the rapidly worsening tensions along the border. Regional efforts to ease the confrontation now face renewed pressure as both sides exchange accusations and military action continues.
