Thursday, September 23, 2026 - Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in the United States for a three-day state visit, with high-level talks with President Donald Trump scheduled at the White House on Thursday.
Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were personally welcomed by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, marking the start of a closely watched visit focused on major issues in US-China relations.
Trade, artificial intelligence, rare-earth minerals and wider geopolitical tensions are expected to feature prominently in the discussions.
The two countries have also extended their current tariff truce, giving negotiators additional time to work toward a broader economic agreement. Taiwan, Iran and Ukraine are among other issues that could arise during the talks as Washington and Beijing manage several areas of disagreement.
Xi’s visit is the first state visit by a Chinese president to Washington in more than a decade and comes as both governments seek to manage tensions while maintaining dialogue.
The leaders are scheduled to hold formal talks at the White House, followed by a state dinner, with Xi expected to conclude the visit on Friday. The outcome of the meetings could provide further indications of how the two sides intend to handle trade, technology and broader strategic differences.
