Myanmar military bombing kills at least 50 in northern Rakhine state

Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - At least 50 people have been killed and 58 others wounded after a Myanmar military airstrike hit a crowded market area in Kyauktaw township in northern Rakhine state, according to local sources and reports.

The strike took place on September 28, when a military jet reportedly attacked an area around the Kaladan Bridge and the busy Indian Market, where shoppers, traders and workers were present.

The death toll rose from an initial 33 as rescuers recovered more bodies from the scene. The Arakan Army, which controls Kyauktaw, said the attack involved two bombs dropped near the market, while a local rescue official described it as one of the most severe airstrikes in Rakhine.

Myanmar's military has not immediately commented on the latest attack, although it has previously said its air operations target legitimate military positions.

The strike adds to the mounting humanitarian crisis in Rakhine, where fighting between the military and the Arakan Army has displaced nearly half a million people, according to UN data.

The latest attack has intensified concern over civilian safety as the conflict continues, with reports indicating that the military has increasingly relied on air power in areas controlled by opposition and ethnic armed groups.
