Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - Amelia Dimoldenberg took aim at Ed Sheeran during her opening monologue as host of Saturday Night Live UK, delivering a pointed joke about the singer amid controversy surrounding his Loop Tour.
Dimoldenberg described a “world-famous, red-headed puppet” before a picture of Elmo appeared on screen. She then added, “No, the other one,” as the image changed to a photograph of herself with Sheeran.
The joke came as Sheeran faced criticism following the removal of Macklemore from the remaining dates of his tour after the rapper made pro-Palestinian remarks during a performance.
Sheeran has said the decision was made by the tour promoter rather than him, while several other support acts subsequently withdrew from the tour. Sheeran later addressed the controversy during a Philadelphia concert, apologising to fans and speaking about the situation in Gaza and Israel.
Dimoldenberg’s jab quickly became one of the talking points from her SNL UK debut, adding another layer to the continuing public discussion around Sheeran and the tour controversy.
The comedian, best known for Chicken Shop Date, previously interviewed Sheeran in 2021, making the decision to use their old image part of the punchline. Sheeran had not publicly responded to the joke in the immediate aftermath of the broadcast.
