Wednesday, September 23, 2026 - Veteran BBC journalist Mark Doyle has died aged 67 following a short illness, the BBC has announced. Doyle was widely known for his reporting from Africa, where he covered major conflicts and humanitarian crises during a career that spanned decades.
News of his death on September 22, 2026, has prompted tributes from former colleagues who described him as a highly respected and courageous correspondent.
Doyle joined the BBC in 1986 and became its East Africa correspondent in 1993. He was among the journalists reporting from Rwanda during the 1994 genocide and later covered the civil war in Sierra Leone while serving as West Africa correspondent from 1997 to 2002.
He went on to work as a BBC World Affairs correspondent before retiring from the broadcaster in 2015.
Tributes have continued to emerge following the announcement, with BBC foreign editor Paul Danahar describing Doyle as a “legendary figure” and a “brilliant, brave, empathetic reporter.”
