Young woman killed and five injured in shooting at Swiss celebration in Aarau

Sunday, August 30, 2026 - A 22-year-old woman was killed and five others injured after gunfire erupted at a large rave in Aarau, Switzerland, in the early hours of Sunday. The shooting happened at a covered horse-racing track in the Schachen district during a techno event attended by around 3,500 people.

The woman, an Italian citizen who lived in Switzerland, died at the scene, while four men and another woman, aged between 24 and 27, were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to severe.

The shooting sent the celebration into panic as attendees rushed to find cover and emergency services moved quickly to secure the area. Police said the gunfire occurred between about 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m., near the end of the event.

Investigators recovered ammunition from at least two calibers, raising questions about whether more than one weapon was involved. Large parts of the surrounding area were cordoned off as heavily armed police began searching for the suspected attacker or attackers.

Authorities have not established a motive and are examining several possibilities, including terrorism, a mass shooting and a criminal incident linked to a personal dispute.

A major manhunt is underway, with Swiss authorities working alongside German police because of the location’s proximity to the border. Police have appealed to people who attended the event to provide photographs or videos that could help identify those responsible as the investigation continues.
