Sunday, August 30, 2026 - At least eight people have died after a ferry carrying 267 passengers and crew capsized and sank off the northern coast of Cyprus on Sunday.
The vessel, travelling from Kyrenia to the Turkish port of Tasucu, began taking on water around 15 minutes after leaving the harbor. At least 237 people have been rescued, while a number of passengers remain missing as search-and-rescue teams continue operations in the Mediterranean.
The ferry sank in waters about 514 meters deep, creating major challenges for rescue teams searching for those still unaccounted for. Survivors described chaotic scenes as the vessel rapidly took on water before overturning.
Turkish and Turkish Cypriot coast guard units, helicopters and other vessels have been deployed in the operation, while injured survivors have been taken to hospitals for treatment.
The captain and seven crew members have been detained as authorities investigate what caused the disaster and whether any safety procedures were breached.
Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues. With several people still missing, rescue teams remain focused on locating survivors and establishing exactly what happened aboard the ferry before it sank.
