Tuesday, August 11, 2026 - A California man has received an extraordinary message from his late parents after a postcard they sent from Denmark in 2000 finally arrived at his home 26 years later.
Bob Sheppard discovered the weathered postcard in his mailbox in Long Beach on August 5, 2026, signed simply “Mom and Dad.” The card described their view while flying into Copenhagen and carried a postmark from July 2000.
The timing made the unexpected delivery even more emotional. Sheppard’s father, John, died six years ago during the pandemic, while his mother, Joanne, died four years ago.
He said COVID-19 restrictions meant he was unable to properly say goodbye to his father, making the long-delayed postcard feel particularly meaningful. The card was the only piece of mail he received that day, turning an ordinary trip to the mailbox into an unforgettable moment.
The postcard appears to have spent more than two decades lost somewhere in the postal system before finally resurfacing. Sheppard’s mail carrier suggested it may have fallen behind a desk, cabinet or other equipment and only recently been discovered.
For Sheppard, however, the explanation mattered less than the message itself. He described the unexpected arrival as “almost a postcard from heaven” — a final connection to his parents that arrived decades after they had sent it.
