International coalition calls for protection of UNRWA amid Israel's ‘unprecedented campaign’

Thursday, June 11, 2026- An international coalition of governments and humanitarian organizations has called for stronger protection of the UNRWA, warning that the agency is facing an “unprecedented campaign” amid escalating political and operational pressures linked to the ongoing conflict involving Israel and Gaza.

The coalition argues that efforts to restrict, defund, or delegitimize UNRWA risk collapsing essential services for millions of Palestinian refugees, particularly in Gaza, the West Bank, and neighboring host countries.

It warns that disruption to the agency’s operations would immediately deepen humanitarian suffering, especially in areas already facing severe shortages of food, medical supplies, and shelter.

The appeal comes as UNRWA continues to operate under extreme strain, with staff safety concerns, funding uncertainty, and restricted access to conflict zones.

Supporters of the agency are urging member states to ensure its mandate is preserved, while critics argue that reforms are needed in how aid is delivered. The outcome of this debate is likely to shape the future of humanitarian operations in one of the world’s most volatile regions.
