Thai woman is in custody after an American diplomat was found dead in Myanmar

Wednesday, June 10, 2026- An American diplomat assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, has been found dead, and police have detained a Thai woman in connection with the investigation, officials and diplomatic sources say.

The U.S. State Department confirmed the death of the diplomat but provided no further details, saying it was declining to comment out of respect for the family.

According to members of the diplomatic community in Yangon, the diplomat’s body was discovered about two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence & Hotel, a long-term rental popular with diplomats and international visitors located around 1.5 km (1 mile) from the U.S. Embassy.

Myanmar authorities are treating the case as a possible homicide, and local police have taken a Thai woman into custody as part of their inquiry.

Thai officials have confirmed that consular assistance has been provided to the woman and that her family has been notified, but both the Thai Embassy in Yangon and Thailand’s Foreign Ministry have declined to give further details. Myanmar’s police and the hotel management have likewise refused to comment on the ongoing investigation.
