Defense minister resigns as protests rock Bolivia

Wednesday, June 3, 2026-Bolivia's political crisis deepened this week after Defense Minister Marcelo Salinas resigned amid escalating anti-government protests that have spread across major cities and disrupted daily life.

The resignation marks one of the most significant setbacks for President Rodrigo Paz's administration as labor unions, social movements, and groups aligned with former president Evo Morales intensify pressure on the government. Road blockades, strikes, and demonstrations have severely affected transportation, supply chains, and economic activity across the country.

The protests are largely driven by growing frustration over rising living costs, fuel shortages, and austerity measures introduced by the government. What began as labor-related actions has evolved into a nationwide challenge to the administration's authority.

Multiple cabinet departures in recent weeks highlight the increasing strain within the government as officials struggle to contain the unrest and restore public confidence.

For investors, businesses, and regional observers, the situation presents a critical test for Bolivia's political and economic stability. Continued disruptions could affect key sectors including mining, energy, and transportation, while uncertainty may delay investment decisions.

With pressure mounting on President Paz to find a negotiated solution, the coming days could determine whether Bolivia moves toward stabilization or faces a prolonged period of political and economic turbulence.
