Monday, May 4, 2026-A search and rescue operation is underway after two U.S. service members went missing during a multinational military exercise in southwestern Morocco, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed.
The pair disappeared on May 2 near the Cap Draa Training Area, close to the coastal city of Tan Tan, during the ongoing African Lion 2026 drills involving thousands of troops from the U.S., Morocco, and partner nations.
Officials say the service members were not actively participating in training at the time of their disappearance. Early reports indicate they may have been on a recreational hike near rugged cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean when they went missing.
The area’s difficult terrain has complicated search efforts, prompting the use of coordinated ground, air, and maritime resources from multiple countries.
The incident has led to a temporary pause in parts of the exercise as military units redirect assets to the search operation. Authorities stress that the situation is still under investigation, with no indication so far of hostile activity.
As efforts continue, officials have emphasized that the priority remains locating the missing personnel and supporting their families during what remains an active and rapidly developing search mission.
