Monday, April 13, 2026-An individual accused of attempting to firebomb the home of Sam Altman in San Francisco reportedly left behind a trail of online writings expressing deep fears that artificial intelligence could lead to the end of humanity, according to investigators and court filings.
The suspect, identified as Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, is alleged to have thrown a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s residence before being arrested hours later near OpenAI offices.
Authorities say Moreno-Gama had been active in online forums and writings where he repeatedly warned that advanced AI systems posed an existential threat, describing a “race to the grave” between humanity and increasingly powerful machines.
His posts reportedly claimed that AI could become uncontrollable and eventually surpass human decision-making, reflecting broader fears often discussed in AI safety communities. These writings included references to dystopian scenarios and concerns about what he believed was unsafe rapid development of frontier AI systems.
The case has intensified debate around how extreme narratives about artificial intelligence can spill over into real-world behavior. While AI researchers and safety advocates acknowledge legitimate risks tied to advanced systems, experts also warn that apocalyptic framing can distort perception and, in rare cases, contribute to radicalization.
As the investigation continues, the incident is being examined both as a criminal case and as part of a wider conversation about how society discusses the future risks of AI without escalating fear into violence.
