What to know about the F-35 fighter jet that TRUMP is selling to Saudi Arabia

The F-35 Lightning II is considered one of the U.S.’s most advanced fifth-generation fighter jets, featuring stealth coatings, advanced radar and sensors, and powerful networking capabilities that let it communicate with other aircraft and ground forces.

It was originally designed to replace older aircraft like the F-16 and to be flexible — meaning pilots can go from bombing runs to aerial combat within a single mission. Over 1,200 F-35s have been built so far, supporting a large defense supply chain and many U.S. jobs.

Operating and maintaining the F-35 fleet is hugely expensive: over a projected 77-year lifespan, the cost may exceed $2 trillion. The program has suffered from delays, with many jets delivered late. Readiness is also a concern, as only about 55% of jets could complete a tasked mission in 2023.

Some experts argue that while the F-35 is very capable, it is also costly to maintain, especially its stealth coating, and may not outperform some older jets in every role. Supporters counter that its combat record, extensive flight hours, and widespread use among allied nations highlight its strategic value.

The sale of the F-35 to Saudi Arabia has raised major geopolitical concerns. One issue is whether transferring such advanced jets could erode Israel’s qualitative military edge in the region. There are also fears about technology leakage, particularly due to Saudi Arabia’s security ties with China.

By approving the sale, Trump is deepening military ties with Saudi Arabia and elevating the kingdom’s status to major non-NATO ally, making future weapons transfers easier. Critics warn that giving Saudi Arabia top-tier stealth jets without strong diplomatic or security conditions could shift the balance of power in a volatile region.
