1 killed in large fire at luxury resort in Dominican Republic

Sunday, June 21, 2026- A devastating fire at a luxury beach resort in the Dominican Republic has left one person dead and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,700 tourists.

The blaze erupted at the Viva Dominicus Beach resort in Bayahibe, spreading rapidly across parts of the property and sending thick smoke into the air.

Emergency crews responded quickly to contain the fire, while guests were moved to safe locations as authorities worked to prevent further casualties.

Officials confirmed that the victim was an Italian tourist who died from smoke inhalation. Several other people required medical attention, with some treated at the scene and others transported to nearby hospitals.

Investigators believe strong winds and highly flammable thatched roofing materials contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, although the exact cause remains under investigation.

The incident has renewed attention on safety standards at major tourist destinations, particularly as peak travel season brings thousands of visitors to Caribbean resorts.

While tourism operations in the surrounding area continue, the damaged resort is expected to remain closed as assessments and investigations continue.

The tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness, infrastructure safety, and rapid response measures in protecting lives during unexpected disasters.
