TRUMP designates chapters of Muslim Brotherhood as ‘foreign terrorist organizations’

Tuesday, November 25, 2025 -
In a decisive move on Monday, President Donald Trump launched the process to designate select chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations.

The executive order directs the State and Treasury Departments to identify which branches — including those in Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan — meet the criteria, with sanctions and legal restrictions potentially following within weeks. This marks a sharp escalation in U.S. policy targeting Islamist networks abroad.

The administration cited recent intelligence alleging that certain Brotherhood branches have provided support to militant groups, including Hamas, and facilitated attacks in the region.

U.S. officials emphasized that the goal is to cut off funding, prevent material support, and curtail activities that could threaten American interests or allies in the Middle East. The process also allows the designation of other affiliated groups that meet these security criteria.

Experts warn the move could have immediate implications for international relations, particularly with Middle Eastern nations where the Brotherhood operates politically or socially.

While no chapters are officially on the U.S. terrorist list yet, the swift execution of this policy signals a high-stakes crackdown that could reshape U.S. counterterrorism strategy and influence regional dynamics in the coming months.
