Thursday, November 13, 2025 -A newly completed 758‑metre (about 2,500‑foot) bridge in the mountainous Sichuan Province region of southwest China partially collapsed on Tuesday afternoon.
Local authorities reported no casualties or injuries, thanks in part to the fact the structure had been closed to traffic just the day before the failure.
According to official statements, the bridge — which forms part of the national highway linking the Sichuan heartland to the Tibetan Plateau — was closed on Monday after cracks appeared in the adjacent slopes and roadways and signs of ground movement were detected on the mountainside.
On Tuesday, the unstable terrain triggered landslides that undermined the bridge’s approach section and roadbed, causing part of the structure to collapse into the river and mountainside below.
The incident raises fresh concerns over infrastructure safety in geologically challenging regions, particularly where rapid construction meets difficult terrain.
Officials say investigations are now underway to determine the full cause and to assess remaining structural risks. Meanwhile, the highway connection will remain disrupted until a safe reopening can be confirmed.
