UN security council votes against lifting Iran sanctions

Sunday, September 21, 2025 -The United Nations Security Council has voted against a resolution to lift sanctions on Iran, leaving measures set to be reimposed under the “snapback” mechanism from the 2015 nuclear deal.

The resolution, introduced by South Korea, failed to gain the required nine votes in favor. Only four members supported it, while a majority rejected or abstained.

The decision means that beginning September 27, sanctions will return on Iran, including restrictions on arms sales, missile technology, travel, and nuclear-related activities. European powers triggered the snapback process last month, accusing Iran of failing to comply with nuclear obligations.

Iran has condemned the move as politically motivated, while Western nations argue it is necessary to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Diplomats say negotiations may still be possible during upcoming UN discussions, but tensions remain high as the deadline approaches.
