Second victim found after suspected fatal grizzly attack in British Columbia

Thursday, November 5, 2026 - A devastating suspected grizzly bear attack in Bella Coola, British Columbia, has left a mother and her 20-year-old daughter dead after authorities recovered the second victim during an extensive search operation. The victims were identified by family members as 48-year-old Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter, Selah Reed.

Their remains were discovered near the Snooka West Trail after relatives reported them missing on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The first victim was found on Monday, while the second was recovered during search operations on Tuesday afternoon. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the small coastal community.

The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service confirmed that investigators are examining evidence suggesting that one or more bears may have been involved. Inspector Jeff Tyre said it remains unclear whether multiple grizzlies participated in the attack.

Conservation officers and police have launched efforts to locate and capture any bears potentially responsible, warning residents and visitors to stay away from the affected trail.

Authorities have also indicated that any bear confirmed to be responsible will be killed under provincial wildlife safety guidelines. The victims had reportedly gone for a walk and were familiar with the surrounding area.

The incident has renewed serious concerns about human-wildlife conflicts in British Columbia, particularly in communities where grizzly bears are frequently encountered. The tragedy is especially painful for Bella Coola, which experienced another major bear attack in November 2025 that left several schoolchildren and adults injured.

Local authorities are now under pressure to strengthen public safety measures, improve wildlife monitoring and prevent further encounters. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the grieving families, protecting residents and establishing exactly what happened on the trail.
