Female bus conductor dies after being pushed out of moving vehicle

Thursday, November 5, 2026 - A 24-year-old female bus conductor in India's Telangana state has died after allegedly being pushed out of a moving bus during an argument over a passenger's fare. The victim, identified as Gundla Pravalika, died late on November 3 at a private hospital in Hyderabad after spending 10 days receiving treatment for severe injuries.

The incident occurred on October 25 near Mittagudem village, where she reportedly fell beneath the bus and was run over by its rear wheels. The tragedy has sparked widespread concern over passenger violence and the safety of public transport workers.

According to police reports, the confrontation began when a female passenger identified as Mounika disputed the fare and change for her son's ticket. The passenger had reportedly paid with a 100-rupee note, but Pravalika did not have sufficient change and asked her to collect the remaining amount later.

An argument followed, during which the passenger allegedly pushed the conductor out of the moving vehicle. Pravalika suffered devastating injuries to both legs and was initially treated at a hospital in Bhadrachalam before being transferred to Hyderabad for advanced medical care. Police detained the passenger and registered a case.

The death has triggered protests among Telangana State Road Transport Corporation employees, with workers demanding strict punishment for those responsible. The state government has announced compensation of one million Indian rupees, a house for the family and a government job for Pravalika's mother.

Beyond the financial assistance, the incident has renewed calls for stronger protection of transport employees who regularly face confrontations while performing their duties. Authorities now face growing pressure to ensure workplace safety, strengthen passenger conduct enforcement and prevent similar tragedies across India's public transport network.
