German chancellor reaffirms government’s course of reforms

Thursday, October 22, 2026 - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reaffirmed his government's commitment to major reforms aimed at strengthening the economy, modernising public services and improving Germany's long-term competitiveness.

Speaking at the Invest in Germany summit in Berlin on October 19, 2026, Merz urged investors to support the country's modernisation drive, highlighting plans to reduce bureaucracy, digitalise public administration and reform social security systems. The government is pressing ahead with its agenda as Germany faces growing economic and demographic challenges.

The reform programme also focuses on upgrading infrastructure, expanding investment in green energy and strengthening national defence. Merz said Germany plans to commit more than €500 billion by the end of the decade to improve defence capabilities and modernise military infrastructure.

Changes to pensions, healthcare and long-term care remain key priorities as the government seeks to make social systems financially sustainable while supporting economic growth. However, the proposed changes face public scrutiny, particularly over how the costs and benefits will be distributed among workers, businesses and pensioners.

The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the government's plans translate into tangible improvements for households and businesses. Reducing administrative delays, attracting investment and creating conditions for sustainable growth will be central tests of the reform agenda.

Merz's government must also address public concerns about the fairness of proposed social changes as it works to maintain support for its policies. The outcome could shape Germany's economic direction, investor confidence and the future of its social welfare system.
