France imposes curfew in Lille after riots

Thursday, October 22, 2026 - France has introduced nighttime curfew measures in Lille and other northern cities following violent protests, looting and clashes with police.

The restrictions, announced on October 19, aim to restore public order, protect residents and prevent further damage to businesses and public property. Authorities are responding urgently as unrest spreads across several parts of the country, raising fresh concerns about public safety and security.

The measures include restrictions from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for two nights in Lille, Douai, Wattignies and Denain, according to the French prime minister’s office. The unrest followed demonstrations over rising living costs and other public grievances that escalated into violence.

French authorities are strengthening security measures as officials face pressure to prevent further attacks, protect local businesses and restore confidence among affected communities.

Residents and business owners are urged to follow official safety instructions, monitor local announcements and avoid areas affected by demonstrations or clashes. The coming days will be critical as authorities assess whether the restrictions can contain the unrest and prevent renewed violence.

With public safety and economic activity at stake, the situation in northern France remains an important developing story that demands close attention.
