Egypt’s SISI says his presidency will end in 2030, outlines plan to prepare future leaders

Sunday, October 18, 2026 - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has confirmed that his presidency will end in 2030, declaring that the decision is final as he outlines a new plan to prepare the country’s next generation of leaders. Speaking at a military academy graduation ceremony on October 17, 2026, Sisi said Egypt’s Constitution would not be amended to extend his tenure.

The announcement comes as attention turns to the country’s political future and how leadership will transition after Sisi, who has been president since 2014, completes his current six-year term.

Under the proposed initiative, the Egyptian Military Academy will host a 30-month leadership training programme for qualified candidates, including individuals holding doctoral degrees from recognised Egyptian and foreign universities. Participants will study how state institutions operate, how public resources are managed and how national responsibilities are carried out.

A committee involving the speaker of parliament, intellectuals, politicians and government ministers is expected to develop selection criteria and draft legislation for the programme. Sisi said graduates could be considered for senior positions, including the presidency, ministerial offices and governorships, although the precise process for selecting future leaders has not yet been fully explained.

The announcement has placed Egypt’s succession process firmly in the spotlight, particularly because the proposed programme gives the military academy a central role in preparing future civilian leaders. Supporters may view the initiative as an opportunity to strengthen leadership skills and improve government preparedness, while questions remain about political competition, transparency and how candidates will ultimately be chosen.

As 2030 approaches, the effectiveness of the plan will depend on the rules established, the fairness of the selection process and the public’s ability to choose its leaders through constitutional procedures. Egypt now faces a crucial period of preparation, with the decisions made today likely to shape the country’s political direction well beyond 2030.
